'80 DL Speedo 200

Hi, All

A couple hundred miles back I came off the hiway w/ a loud "cracking" noise and a very jumpy speedo. I disconnected cable at tranny and used drill to drive cable. Wifey reported smoothe operation of speedo with drill as driver while up on jacks. I left cable disconnected and have driven a week or so. No noises.

I suspect the problem in the drive gear. I'm trying to work up the courage to pull the assembly out but it doesn't look like advertised in Haynes manual. There is no machined area to affix a wrench to. It looks like a large threaded shaft disappears into the tranny housing and the cable mounts to the small square fitting that protrudes from it. I can't figure what holds the assembly in or how to grab it other than by the threads (a no-no, I know).

Or should I live without the speedo, given other horror stories I've heard about not getting the assembly back in once out.

And just why might that assembly go bad after only 275k miles?

Any advice/experience greatly appreciated.

Chuck2
