Well I told everyone here how my poor volvo got butchered by a local volvo repair shop and has been sitting for a good six months. Well this morning I got motivated and tore the engine compartment apart, removing the head, intake and exaust manifold. The shop had given a final diagnosis of a failed turbo charger causing oil to blow by into the engine as well as the exaust.

So all of you know, the car seemed to run great, minus the fact it was gutless. It did not burn oil before, but when I got it back it does now.

It does not seem to burn right away when the car is started, it needs to sit awhile. If you do not give the car any throttle, it does not smoke at all.

It only smokes under acceleration.

Could it be rings? The compression checked out great on the car. I thought around 150lbs on every cylinder, if it had bad rings would the compression be lower?

Since I did not see any oil in the exaust manifold, and the turbo itself was clean and spun freely, I doubt it was the turbo that is bad.

There was however a fair amount of oil along the intake, intercooler tubes. So maybe it could be?

Another thought is, because these morons installed the oil tube wrong, and leaked out a bunch of my oil. Maybe they put dino oil into the car instead of synthetic? I hear synthetic does not produce smoke.

So if it's the turbo, can I replace seals on the thing? or do I need to replace the entire cartridge? I mean the turbo spins great.
