Exhaust Rattle and Poor Power 700 1990

Last weekend my 1990 745 (non-turbo) developed a loud exhaust rattle and seems to have lost a lot of power. The car starts and idles fine, but the power is poor and it seems to be using more fuel than usual. The problem has come on very suddenly and almost feels like a clogged converter. Do they "breakup" internally and stop up the exhaust? Any ideas on the subject?
