960 engine shake 900 1994

A few people responded to my question about engine shake at idle. Some suggested a failed intake manifold gasket. I have another question, if there were engine fault codes pending, would they trigger the check engine light? What is needed to retrive the codes?

The engine shake is consistant and regular. I was going to try disconnecting spark plugs one at a time and see the result. Any comments? Thanks in advance.
