I own an 82 GLT turbo wagon. It has the b21ft motor.
Symptoms:
Cold starts - the engine starts and idles above 1000 rpm. Once the idle settles down to under 1000 is stumbles and dies. If I try to restart the car, it just stumbles and dies. If I let it sit for a while and try to restart it, the car again idles above a 1000 rpm for a couple of seconds and dies. If I start the car and rev it to 3000 rpm, it revs for a few seconds and I hear I click noice and the car stumbles and dies. The click noice is coming from the power stearing pump area or around that compartment area by the battery. I can't pin point it exactly because I can't get it to make the click again until the car has been sitting for a while like overnight.
Symptoms when the car was running:
The car was running fairly well, It would start up just fine in the mornings and run descent. I did notice however some hesitation during acceleration up to 3000 rpms and not higher. If I let the car sit for a couple of hours it would try to start but stumble and die. To get it to start I had to crank the starter longer and give it some gas. I would also have to rev it up to get it settle down and idle properly. Once I got it to idle properly, it would drive fine like in the mornings. I noticed this only happened when I had let the car sit for a couple of hours. If I restarted the car right away or let it sit overnight, it would start without any problems.
Recent things I have done to the car:
So far I've replaced plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and some vacuum tubes. The car ran fine until I replace the vacuum tubes. I noticed there were a lot of vacuum tubes that were split open so I replaced them with new ones. I replaced the two going down to the charcoal cannister from the throttle body. I also replace the ones running to the pressure regulator and thermol switch. I also checked the pcv hose and had to clean it out. It wasn't clogged but needed a cleaning. I removed the idle speed motor and cleaned it. I also checked electrical connections under and around the intake manifold and they all seemed nice and tight except for the one going to the pressure regulator located under the intake manifold. The metal ring around the connector is missing so I could pull the connector of the regulator quite easily. But I do notice however that when I push it back down, I feel the connector slide over the two prongs. And, I do believe it's been like that for a long time and was like that when my car was running. The bottom tube coming from the regulator has a one way valve on it and one side says carb and the other dist. I'm not sure if I put it back right. Which side should point towards the regulator?
Things I think could be wrong:
Replace Charcoal Cannister?
Replace Idle speed motor?
Replace Fuel pump in-tank or main pump?
Fuel regulator if I have one?
Air mass meter if I have one?
Other sensors?
Timing, idle adjustment?
etc...?
Any suggestions where I should look or start replacing parts?
Thanx for your feedback
