Hello to all you rollers,

Am about to try again reinstalling (brand new) PCV/oil breather parts on an '81 244GL. Is much more of a challenge than I expected, have done this job on 2 140s as well as my 245 from '83 which has different fuel injection than on the '81 (my girlfriend's car).

See, I am 6'3 and have hands to match. Took off idle air valve/motor, access was then good enough to see what was up and remove the old sludged up parts. Had to place a piece of plywood over the engine, climbed right in there like it was a semi truck cuz it hurts too much to bend anymore.

Rippped knuckles on both hands just reaching in there....Do I really have to remove the intake manifold for this job?

As I was working on a Toyota Celica recently, I realized the importance of EXTENSIONS in our toolkits. Can I extend the "funnel" shaped piece the dealer sold me, an inch or two or three so that the flame trap and "y" connector to intake manifold sits up higher, providing easier reassembly? W/some copper pipe and/or heater hose, I could probably lengthen the thing.

One thing I've noticed is that newfangled plastic flame arrestor doesn't fit well into funnel-shaped hose and does make fitting the y connector a challenge unless you preassemble all three pieces. Preasssembled, I can't get my hand all the way down to the breather box itself. BTW Is it painted red like the old days?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's had this problem. If I fail, is it really conceivable to plug intake hoses and run crankcase fumes out the back somewhere, as I heard they did in the really old days? No vehicle or emissions testing in my neck of woods.
