weird transmission noise (aw71) 700 1988

hi there, guys...

i have a '88 740 gle, automatic aw71. just today, the car started making a weird sound. it appears that it's from the transmission. the noise is like there is a dead cat flippin around in the tranny. the noise is there in all the gears, even P and N. when driving, you can't go over 2000 RPM because of the vibration and dull noise and gear-changing is sluggish. what do you guys think it is? before this, i have had no problems with the tranny. btw, the car has 250,000 miles on it.

any ideas? i hope it's not the whole tranny requiring a rebuild or something. also, please guesstimate at the cost im looking at to get it fixed.
