Anyone manged to fix an intermittent speedo? 700

The speedo/odometer on our 1990 740 GLE cuts in and out. The fault appears to be local to the instrument housing and not at the sensor because if you clout the top of the console the needle will jump up and sometimes will start working again. I can't find any bad connection at the points where the wiring loom connects to the the cluster and I cant see any obvious breaks in the circuitry on the speedos pcb.

So does anyone have any experience of resurrecting a speedo short of replacing the unit? This could be much money I suspect.
