In-tank Pump Replacement Questions 200 1982

Last night I removed the access panel in the trunk for the pre-pump. I dont have the pump yet.. I was just doing some recon. It was a rusty crusty mess in there, specifically the fittings and hardware on the top of the tank. What exatcly is the procedure for gaining access to the inside of the tank while not contaminating the gas with debris / rust etc...

I have heard stories of a 'large plastic nut' that needs to be remove but I'm not sure I see that.

Any tips before I proceed ar appreciated.
