HI,
After some work on the tuning side, I'm at last happy with my B20B which changed my 65 121 into a very fun car, able to surprise the other drivers: they don't believe such an old car will beat their own car when on the motorway... Major drawback is the fuel consumption, which is a bit more than what I would like to afford (at least in europe where fuel is around 1 US$ a liter...). Well, no regrets anyway: I love my amazon. It only lacks some suspension improving yet.
2 questions about this beloved SU carburetted B20B:
1) I've tuned it very nicely in my opinion, following different procedures I found on the web. The only thing that remains a mystery to me is the "centering of the jets" described in some procedures: if the piston doesn't come down "claking" as it should, the jet is to be recentered: how is that achieved since the jet is a perfect fit in the "jet guide"? My pistons do "clack". What is the wrong noise I should be monitoring?
2) Even, if it's a thirsty car compared to the ones I've owned in the past I'm very happy with the mileage I get on the highway (a little more than 9.5 liters/100 km (around 25 miles / US gallon), which is what I expected it to be. As soon as I get off the higway, though, the consumption increases significantly: contry roads ask for a 25% increase (30% with a heavy foot), montain roads ak for 30-35% more fuel, and city driving brings me to a dreadful 15 liters / 100 km (16 miles/gal)... Are these figures normal? If not what do you suspect:
timing is around 15° (static, I don't have access to a timing lamp: followed the swedish embassy procedure), SU's have been serviced (service kit except rebushing, the play is acceptable), ignition points start to be old (8'000 km) valves are correcly adjusted (.02 inch).
Would it be possible to go even more economic?
Thanks for any feedback/diagnosis
