B230 flywheel for manual trans--crankshaft position indicator pins 200 1989

I replaced a M47 transmission on my 240DL and discovered that the flywheel must be positioned correctly in order for the engine to run. I will be pulling the transmission for the 3rd time today. My manual shows two extra holes on the flywheel that are called "crankshaft position indicator pins." I have only holes--no pins. Does anyone know if there are supposed to be pins in those holes?

When I (incorrectly) replaced the flywheel the first time, the engine knocked excessively. I pulled the trans and repositioned the flywheel, aligning the holes according to the picture in the manual. Now my engine will not rev up. I replaced the sensor, but it did not help. There are no fault codes either.
