r134a discharge? 200 1993

I am getting ready to pull the head in my 240 wagon.
Since the AC hose runs directly over the head, I will need to disconnect it.
So my question is: Can I discharge the R134a refrigerant myself?
I have read conflicting reports about the safety for both humans and the enviroment.
Something tells me not to do it. but it would be nice to not have to take it someplace
and probably end up paying for it if it causes no harm to the enviroment or myself.
