speedometer medium/rare 200 1986

i think i fried my speedometer. but i'm not 100% sure, i was reinstalling my instrument cluster yesterday on my 86 240dl wagon, and i noticed some wires that had not been connected. (white and red wire) as it turns out, thats the tachometer lead off the coil (wish i knew that when i was installing an after market tach) well, instead of investigating, i just hooked it up next to the blue wire on the back of the cluster where there was another open spot for that type of connector, and when i turned the ignition to the on position, it was pegged at 120mph, i turn the ignition to off and it goes back to zero. first thing i did was disconnect that wire, and it still does it. after a few hours of watching the needle dance from 0 to 120 i asumed that it was unfixable, now, am i going to have to get a new speedo unit? or is there a relay somewhere that got fried, or any other possabilities. reason i took the cluster out was to change the color of the lights that iluminate the dash, it now has a redish amber look to the cluster like BMWs do, i tried removing those lights as well, but the speedo still pegs at 120 when the key is turned to any position. the lights look real nice, but they dont do me any good without a working speedo =P anyway, any light shined on this matter (bad pun, sorry) would be greatly appreciated. peace.
