Okay, here's whats going on with my '84 240.
My speedometer cable needed lubing. SO, I took it off, and after I was finished, the needle bounced WORSE than it had before, till a speed above about 40 MPH was reached.
Then, about a week ago, it went haywire. I was doing 70 or so, according to the needle, and all of a sudden, the needle goes NUTS, bouncing from 0 to 100 completely erratically, and making a strange scraping sound. Then, without warning, it would return to where it belonged, around 70 MPH. Then, it would bounce and hover in speeds far too low--like, 20. Now, it bounces like that pretty much all the time, and then hovers in the 20-30 range (despite how much faster I'm going) without anything near an accurate reading. And it makes a strange scraping sound--the sound is like metal against something; it's very quiet, and increases in frequency as speed increases. I checked the connection, and as far as I can tell, the cable is attatched securely to the back of the panel...so what's wrong with my speedo?
Thanks
Volfro
