speedometer/odometer/trip not working on 86 740 700 1986

Just bought an 86 740 GLE and the speedometer od. and trip are not working at all,
also the gas guage reads empty when full. I thought it read 1/2 tank when I bought it. What should I do first short of buying another speedometer transmitter that may or may not be faulty? Also I've read some posts here that describe my gas guage problem after installing a new sending unit!!!!!!!! So I'm a little confused as how to procede in my diagnostic sequence. Any insight would be appreciated.
