What is this noise?
My 95 960 with 110K is making a loud clatter from underneath every time you go over the slightest bump. I'd describe the sound as the same sound you'd hear if the starter or some other heavy bolt on part were loose and about to fall off.
I've had it up on 4 jackstands and spent an hour looking around under there, and nothing seems loose. Over the last 20K miles it's gotten more pronounced.
The only suspicious thing I've found is that if you wiggle the steering linkage (steering column? the part that leads to the steering wheel) right above where it enters the steering rack, there is a clunk sound. It appears that the bushing on the shaft that protrudes from the steering rack is worn. With the car on the ground, if you turn the steering wheel back and forth, you can hear a clunk noise coming from the steering linkage, but it doesn't seem nearly as loud as what you hear when you're driving.
I've tried wiggling/pushing/pulling/lifting on all 4 wheels with the car on jackstands, and I can't produce any noise or visible movement.
I say it's familiar because my 87 760 140K miles made the same clatter noise when you drove on gravel or some other uneven surface. I sold it before I ever found out what was the matter.
Any guesses?
Thanks in advance,
Bob
