air intake probs 200 1981

Bonsoir,

This '81 GL w/ K jet is turning out to be problematic. Car was purchased in PA by my girlfriend, she drove the car 400 mi. up here to NE Ohio.

Before conferring "daily" driver status I took it for a drive--smell of exhaust. Turned out Flame trap unit w/fully clogged brass insert was askew off where it fits on block, crankcase vapor blowing freely into engine compartment.

Got new flame trap parts, took suggestion of making an extension out of hose/pipe so the thing sits up high, atop cylinder head secured w/wire ties.
Blessed hose routing is difficult on this car...got big hands. '83 that I drive is much easier.

Crankcase leak now gone but engine will no longer idle decently when cold.
Since I'd removed auxiliary air valve for better access to pcv stuff, I couldn't help but point the finger its way. Also had a '74 142 w/ (?)K jet or at least its predecessor system that needed this part.

Tried for hell of it running car w/ no aux air regulator, bypassed w/5/8" generic tee piece. Tried it w/elect. connector both connected and disconnected and the result was the same:

Car starts from cold but will not keep running unless accelerator is "bricked" quite a bit, more than I ever had to do on previous Volvos w/idle probs. Opening throttle/stepping on gas causes engine to bog down and send out gray smoke, seems like injection system is being fooled.

According to MONSIEUR HAYNES, valve should be fully open to let air in while cold so why doesn't my bypass work?

Or could it be something else? Lot of plumbing/wires down there.

Frank
