Hey all. I am the owner of a 1980 528i BMW which has the same issues as your 240's with the odometer gear breaking. We also have the same issue in that no one makes a replacement. It took me about six months but I came up with a way to cast the gears. I would be more than happy to make some odometer gears for your cars. What I need is for someone to send me a good gear, and then within 48 hours I will be able to reproduce them using a high strength, high heat resistant (500 F) resin. For the person who helps he with the first gear, I would gladly give them a gear, no cost. I am figuring I can produce them for $25 a gear. From what I have read in the post lower down, this would be $10 less than the other guy. Let me know what you all think. It would surely be more cost effective than searching though a boneyard to find an old one that may or break next week. Although, I have to say I enjoy the hunt also.
Please look at my website and maybe the gear is the same as the BMW's. VDO wouldn't tell me which speedo is in which car. Nice of them.
The price I charge is because I make these by hand injection. I have to buy the resin, rubber mold, a scale, vacuum chamber, vacuum pump, my time, etc... More than likely there will be several different gears I have to make for everyone. This is how euro cars are calibrated. They change the ratio to the car unlike American cars.
Let me know if I can help.
