OD Solenoid Question 700 1987

87 740 T Automatic.

To test the OD solenoid I pulled it and jumped it at the battery. If it is functioning properly , what should it do? Mine makes sputtering noises.

History: Was blowing # 11 fuse, found bare wire, repaired, replaced (not soldered) the relay, traced wires to make sure juice was traveling. It was. Went ahead and rewired from the solenoid back to the connector. Still no overdrive.

Where should I go now?
