To Nivomat or not to Nivomat? 900 1991

I have a '91 940SE, and my shocks are shot. I know it has the IRS with Nivomat shocks, and that they are very expensive ($250 ea. from IPD), but I have heard that some people have replaced them with regular shocks (springs must also be replaced, right?). So my question is, if I don't get Nivomat shocks will i notice a difference in my ride?
