Alternator main line getting hot 700

The main output on my alternator (the heavy gauge red cable coming off the back) is getting hot (hot enough to melt the little plastic cap that covers the terminal) It has also been reading real low output on the gauge and the idiot lamp is burning dimly. Any ideas?
