engine interchangeability 444-544 1965

i recently came across an 1965 model 544(minus an engine).it might possibly be a first vehicle for my son.what i would like to know is:what year model engines would be an easy swap to a 65 model 544?at first glance,it appears to be all there,so what would work with this tranny? i would prefer a single carb,but could live with duals if they are not known for being too tempermental.i don't normally deal with volvo's(usually 50's era american cars)but we can learn together.any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
