Ok, I've replaced the entire suspension on a 240, minus the front struts. My girlfriend's '89 has a quite annoying clunk from the left strut tower. It had bilstein's put in 4 years or so ago by a volvo mechanic. It didn't clunk until just recently. It clunks both when turning at low speeds and simply when the strut is compressed, on the road or by pushing down on the car. Is the most likely cause the upper strut bearing? Could the top nut just need tightening? Finally, is it possible to take the entire strut assembly out, then go at the top nut? I assume not, but I can't figure out why. anyways, sorry for yet another post concerning these stupid effortful struts....though they can't be as much effort as those dumb trailing arm bushings...
