I am new to Volvos but helping my college aged son restore a '77 245F which he likes. He left for school today with the understanding I would take it to the machine shop tomorrow morning to have the engine thoroughly cleaned (the water jacket makes cleaning mandatory). I removed everything except the cast iron block and was just about to load it in the truck when I realized the intermediate shaft support bearings were still installed.
He thinks replacing these is a big deal, specialized Volvo machine shops or something. The look somewhat awkward but with the bare block on an engine stand (like it is now), I think I could install them. The main trick would be to line the oil gallery holes up with the gallery that goes to the crankshaft gallery (on odd numbered mains?). Questions:
1. Can I have the engine cleaned with these bearings installed, without damaging the bearings?
2. Can I easily tap/press them out or do I have to cut, split or ream them?
3. Can I install them? If so, any tips for tools or methods, especially lining up oil gallery holes? If not, where can I get them installed?
Thanks,
Mark Cantrell
