Tailgate Wiring 200 1984

Ok, I am about to repair both sides of the wiring to the tailgate and have read many of the posts which have raise a few questions. Did I mention I am scared?...Here are my questions. 1)Is it necessary to undo the gas shocks and totally disassemble the Hinges? 2)Is it necessary to solder on the new wires or can I crimp on some male/female connectors at either end? The wires are totally severed therefore where is the best place to make the connection and then how is the best method to feed them through the hinges? Did I mention I am scared?
