brakes have air please help 200 1987

i have a bently manual and it tells me to put a tube going to some brake fluid when bleeding the brakes. is this important can i skip this step? also is there any thing else to do besides bleeding the brakes i can do to get air out of system? NOTE i only took of front brake lines. oh yea if i drove the car for about 12km was it posible that the air spread througout the entire system?? Thanks Alot!!!
