small tach 200 1985

Ijust got a little mini-tach, and tried installing it into my 240.. cut the white/red wire, and installed it onto the tach... and NOTHING..

I looked under the hood, and the coil only has one wire leading to it, and nothing from it.. I'm assuming a previous owner jerry-rigged the wiring, and there's nothing there now.. soooo, where should the wire thats not there connect from, and where should it go to??
