increased turbo noise with K+N filter 700 1989

I put a K+N filter in the turbo this week and I noticed that at the point where vacuum goes to boost on the turbo gauge I hear increased noise from the turbo,but when the boost is above 3 psi then everything sounds normal,I wonder if the stock filter provided some noise reduction?
