Bad Vacuum advance 200

Someone suggested to me that my vacuum advance could be bad. What is it? What does it do? does anybody know? i just know it's under hood close to the front of the engine. I have a 240 dl wagon (245) 1985 non turbo. and it's having vacuum issues.
