GM alternator in a 70 144s 140-160

Has any one ever tried to do a GM small case alternator in a 70 144. Or is it even possable. I'm having some charging problems and thinking of swopping out my alternator and external regulator for some thing alitte better. I'm also planning to install a small sound system so I know I will need to adress this befor I install any equipment.
