740 Tic stalling under brakes 700 1987

When I am driving along, I will sometimes have to turn down side streets or brake suddenly. In these situations I will lift my foot off the acceletator pedal and apply it to the brake pedal instead (see, I did learn something in those driving lessons ;o) , the car will slow down, revs will drop smoothly to normal idle speed, but then revs will suddenly drop to about 250-300rpm, the power steering will stop working, I get a good scare, and in most cases the revs will just as suddenly rise back up to the normal 750rpm idle speed, but on several occations, the car has stalled (not much fun half way round a corner!)

What would cause this sort of behaviour?
