ABS works sometimes 700

Ever since getting my car, a 1988 745 turbo, i notice that at low speed, parking lot speeds, that the abs will go off. Thats okay, i got used to it, and it would stop after the car is warmed up. Last night I went out, and the abs did its thing again, but for the first time the abs light stayed on. So I assume when the light is on, your abs system does not work? The brakes worked fine though. Is it the wheel sensor(s) that are gone?
