Heater core 700 1986

If I get my seat heaters working (the swithces are there but the operation lights don't come on.) I assume my 86 740 has them. Will this keep me toasty, in lieu of replacing my leaky heater core? If I decide to do the much feared job of replacing the core, can it be repaired like a radiator????? A new one is NOT cheap!!!!!!!
