Uh-Oh, Volvo 240 DL no go! 200 1986

Okay, so I'm driving to work this morning, got the heat on at 3, the legs and defrost button pushed in and suddenly, over the Counting Crows, I hear this squeal. I think to myself this isn't good...

I get to work, park the car and pop the hood. Smoke, smoke everywhere. I now know this isn't good. I call my boss (who in his younger years, before embracing his managementhood was a mechanic) and he says the air conditioning compressor has "locked-up". You can see that the pulley isn't always turning. So I go to take the car to a mechanic (I work at the "World's Largest Wholesale Auto Auction - so there are shops on grounds) and the car runs momentarily by itself then dies. I have to two-foot it to the shop and the smell when I get there, oh the smell!

Obviously, the dilemma is bypassing the air conditioning compressor yet retaining my power steering. Any suggestions, similiar tales, repair cost estimates?

Thanks!
