1985 240DL WILL NOT START 200 1985

My 1985 240DL will not start without me removing the cover from the fuel pump relay and manually closing the contact on the left solenoid while cranking the engine. The engine cranks just fine with all sorts of spark but until that left solenoid on the fuel injection/fuel pump relay is closed it will not fire. Closing the left solenoid while cranking causes the right solenoid to close and starts the fuel pumps...the engine quickly fires and runs just fine but as soon as I release my hold keeping the left solenoid contacts closed the engine quits. As near as I can tell from a Haynes manual and examining the relay circut board is that the problem lies in either the two wires off terminal 87/1 (one orange the other brown) or with the yellow wire with the single black stripe off terminal 86/1...the wiring diagram in the manual shows the yellow/black wire going to terminal 21 of the control unit....what does terminal 21 do? Where does the power to terminal 21 come from? The ignition switch? If so which wire on the ignition switch is providing this power? The orange wire goes to the Air Mass meter according to the diagram in the Haynes manual and the brown goes to terminal 9 of the Control Unit...what is terminal 9? I have determined that the following seem OK...Terminal 85 with the red and single black stripe wire has power when the ignition switch is turned on accessory on position, terminal 30 has constant power, terminal 87/2 with the yellow and single red stripe wire carries power to the fuel pumps (fuel pumps operate both by bridging fuses 4 and 6 as well as terminals 30 and 87/2 on the relay regardless of ignition switch position, Terminal 86/2 the green wire with blue stripe does not seem to be a problem as it runs throught the circuts of the relay to the fuel pump side which operates when the left solenoid is triggered. Could someone please provide me with some hints as to what could be going on here...the relay is brand new as I thought this was the problem...$50 later I found that it wasnt and the relay I threw out was likely a good one too. I think that the problem is either the ignition switch or the control unit....am I on the right track? One other thing for clarification...there seems to be two control units on the passenger side of the car in the footwell...one mounted on the kick panel to the right says Jetronic (the fuel injection controls I am guessing) and the other, mounted on the firewall and labeled DANA CORP....what is the one labeled DANA CORP?? The Haynes manual (page 6-4 illustration 3.6b) shows this as an aftermarket ECU...is this right? Is it some sort of control for the cruise control system?

PLEASE HELP....
