Diagnosing idle problems - Air control valve or temp sensor 700

I am having some idle problems on my 1986 745 (not turbo):

When the outside temp is ~80F, the car starts right up, but then sputters and stalls. It then runs fine when it is warm; idle at ~800RPM.

Today, it was pretty cold outside ~55F, and the car started right up and kept running fine. However, when the car got warm, the idle was at 1500RPM. I checked an there was a lot of air flowing through the idle air control valve.

I recently cleaned the idle air control valve and tested it with a 12V power supply. It opened and closed OK. The resistance accross the terminals was a little higher than spec.

I am thinking that the problem is with either the air control valve or the temp sensor. How can I figure out which one is the problem, or do you think that the problem lies elsewhere?

Thanks,
Steve
