heater fan--wazzup w/ only 3 speeds? dufus mechanic was p.o. 200 1981

Gentlemen/ladies,

Would like to get layfriend's '81 244GL back on road before winter, Toyota Celica doesn't stand a chance gainst pickup in an accident. This used to be the snowbelt (NE Ohio)....

The '81 came used from SE PA recently, minimal rust, only in rear wheel wells. Was a 1-owner till 2000, history of car is murky since then.

"Independent mechanic" we bought the car from, to make a long story short, went to numerous expedients to make the care saleable and run. PA inspection sticker, what a joke. Must admit I was distracted by brand new rad. and water pump and nice low reading on temp gauge.

For example, as I found out on return to OH, flame trap parts were clogged and "ajar"; oxygen sensor was disconnected, aux. air motor disfunctional. Ball joints are toast, belly pan missing, leak in exhaust front pipe in usual spot. Several vac. leaks. Yet the car went 500 mi. no prob, at least at 50 mph w/ lady at the wheel (her 1st Volvo).

Sorry for the story but thought I'd say WATCH IT when staring at a lovely green Volvo, check and check again, sleep on it.

I digress: why does the fan blower switch (not orig, it looks too shiny) on this one only have 3 clicks to it? Dash has a "0" position just like on my 83 245....I understand that pre '81 the switch was a 3 position....does this mean that the fan is always getting juice (like on some GM kars?) when the switch is all the way "off"?

Would appreciate any thoughts, am gearing up to inspect/lube lube this car's fan as well as '83s, just did the same on two household fans that had oil ports. Tri-Flow teflonized bicycle oil seems great for this job.

Frank in OH
