122 tire width possibilities? 120-130

Anyone know how wide a tire can be fitted to a 17" rim on a 122 without major modification. I'm looking at getting a set of Mustang "Torq Thrust" rims (17") but they've got 255's on them. I'm thinking that would be impossible. The offset on the rim is 22mm. 17x8 (I've been told). I was wondering maybe a set of 225/40 or 215/45's? Car is lowered aproximately 1.5"front, and 1" rear. Anyone ever measured? I'm away at college, the car is at home, and the wheels may not be available long. Thanks-
