When the temperature drops below 40 degrees, the pinion gear in my starter fails to engage with the flywheel. The starter can be heard spinning. A hammer blow or two to the starter will get things working until it gets cold again.
The starter was removed and dismantled but nothing looked to be stuck or broken. I cleaned some tarry buildup in the pinion gear housing and reinstalled but the cold start jamming still occurs.
I would like to replace just the solenoid but the linkage did not appear to be the same as what is shown in the repair manual for the 544. The linkage on my starter looked like an upside down wishbone with C channels on both arms. There was a fixed washer on the starter shaft that the C channels slid over.
If anyone knows the proper Bosch number for this solenoid and could post it here, I would be most thankful. If not, then a posting indicating the Bosch part number for the entire starter assembly would be appreciated too.
Thanks,
Joe
