trying to work up the courage to do the front seals.. gots me a few questions. 200 1985

I just went back and read Kevin's post about putting in a new cam (good luck Kevin!).

Anyways, I've got all the parts, and the front seals have been leaking for the past year or so (yeah I'm pretty good about checking the oil, but it is getting really messy). The timing belt doesn't look so difficult, slip it off, slip it back on.

But what about the seals?

The Bentley shows the valve cover off with some pliers holding the cam, the next picture shows the valve cover back on as the cam seal is being removed, then replaced. Can I skip the first step and instead use the old t-belt to hold the cam+gear still?

Do I need to use a torque wrench when I tighten everything back together?
