At 237K miles the rear bearing on the 87 760T failed and the alternator broke a belt.
So I got a new one and put it in (heckuva lot easier than a Saab, youbetcha!).
I had converted to an external alternator 5-6 years ago, and had noticed the slip rings had very little wear (gee..think the 14.5v 120amp mod had anything to do with it? The voltage DOESN'T go down with 400w of headlights...)
....kind of led me to believe all I had tø do was replace the voltage regulator/brush carrier or brushes (I've soldered in new brushes øn the carrier) every 140K without other issues. Not.
Guess this means I can look forward to pulling/replacing the alternator on the Saab since it's around 240K on that alternator too.
What;s the average life of alternator slip rings in the Board's experience?
