To center an SU jet. 1800 1966

I am having trouble centering my SU jets. The pistons dont clank down onto the deck when they are dropped unless the jets are a bit loose ( then of course they center themselves.) When I carefully lift the piston out enough to tighten the jet screw I have by them decentered the jet so that it wont clank down on to the deck by itself. Is there a way to do this task without some fancy tool?
