Recently I purchased a used turbo and when it arrived, only half of it was there. I called my source who is always reliable and ask what gives. He said this is the way they do it.
This is the small Mitsu which has the center clamp holding the two halves together. I received the aluminum portion, i.e. the part bringing in and compressing the air and blowing under pressure. Anyway, I thought that I would try it, splitting my turbo apart on the car. I did not unbolt the exhaust driven portion.
To do this: remove intake and output hoses from the turbo plus the hoses for cooling. Good idea to remove the piping at the turbo. The waste gate actuator also needs to be removed, two 13 mm bolts and a pin. You can also unbolt the oil feed line at the turbo and the bracket holding it to the turbo. Remove the clamp holding the two halves of the turbo, tap on the aluminum housing gently and it will come loose. When you remove this half, the oil return pipe will come along.
Reassemble in reverse, without the oil return pipe -- this you put on after the 'new' housing is installed. One thing that almost threw me was the locator pin on the turbo housings. It can be on either side, but comes out easily with a pliers.
My time: 2.5-3 hours, and this is the first time to do it this way. much faster than removing all the exhaust housing stuff.
Maybe I am the only one who didn't know this one, but it worked beautifully for me.
