Car won't accelerate above 50!! 200 1987

Hello All

My brother's '87 244 seems to be experiencing some difficulty. It has an awful lot of trouble accelerating beyond about 50 mph...even to there it seems slower than it should be not sure if this is the normal acceleration, the car is a stock automatic and I am used to driving a modified 5 speed). Right around 50 acceleration becomes VERY slow...almost nonexistent. I did get it up to about 65 after a long time. Like I said, it is an automatic, and kick down works just fine. If it is floored it will kick down into 2nd gear and the engine will rev (there's also a lot of rattling from the undercarriage, but that's a different story...) The engine itself sounds as if it is revving as it should and is getting everything it needs (fuel/air), but the car just isn't putting down the power.

Thanks

Peter
