Brakes - vaccuum? '82 DL 200 1982

Hi all,
the last couple of days, whenever i put my foot on the brake a brief air sucking sound happens at the brake peddle. the brakes come on really strong for that brief second when the sound happens. i understand that my car has vaccuum assisted braking..... does anyone understand what's going on? it doesn't really bother me that much to drive. i just lunge forward slightly every time i brake. also, my car seems to be idling a bit quick lately - could that be related?
