Diesel Engine Problem 700 1990

My 740 is fitted with the VW 2.4 diesel engine. Recently at 142,000 miles I found oil in the cooling system.
Suspecting a head gasket failure the head was removed and found to be cracked across all six points
A complete NEW head was fitted but after only 180 miles the same problem has arisen.
does this mean the block has failed?
has anyone else had this fault?
