stiff steering after installing bilstein struts 200 1990

After I installed new bilstein struts on my 90 240 it now seems that the steering is much stiffer. Is it possible to overtorque the strut nut and cause problems with strut bearings?? I was very careful to reinstall bearing plates in exact position they were prior to removal.
