I need diagnostic help; dead batery old dead alternator? 'URGENT, please help!' 200 1990

Hi.

Lights dim, engine turns over slowly but starts. Obvious to me that the batery is low.

Can I test the alternator to see if it's charging properly?, and how would I proceed? I just would'nt want to change one or the other without being shure which one has gone bad.
