? Auto Transmission Problem 200 1983

I have a 83 245 with 184,000 km, that has been carefully driven all of its life (eg no towing). The auto transmission has also been regularly serviced throughout its life and was most recently serviced (oil and filter) about three months ago (dino oil was used as its almost impossible to get synthetic ATF in Australia). Recently, when starting the car after it has been standing for a few days and putting into reverse nothing happens until I give it lots of revs (1500) or so, then it engages. No signs of slipping etc. ATF level is ok. Trouble brewing?

I wonder if the trans needs an Italian tune up as it the car rarely goes over 60kmph.
