Hatch Lid lock troubles- '88 740 Wagon 700 1988

There is nothing malfunctioning, but I am the 3rd owner of this 1988 740 wagon, and received no owner manual, and no key to wagon's trunk lid was supplied.
When I get out of car, the hatch door is always locked, and I cannot open unless I crawl in thru the back.
The tiny red-tipped switch seems to make no difference either.
I used to be able to push driver-door lock down and back up and sometimes that would unlock the trunk lid, but it will not stay unlocked.
Does anyone know what to do?? Thanks!!!
